Grotto Gemstones – Wax Dopping Learning Series.

Welcome to the Grotto Gemstones Wax Dopping Learning Series.

Wax dopping is a traditional lapidary technique used to securely attach gemstones to wooden dop sticks, making them easier to hold and control during shaping, sanding and polishing.

In this four-part learning series, we'll guide you through the equipment, preparation, attachment and removal techniques involved in wax dopping, with practical workshop advice for beginners and experienced enthusiasts.

Using Grotto Gemstones dopping equipment, we'll demonstrate each stage with photographs and helpful tips, including important precautions when working with heat-sensitive Australian opals.

Lesson 1 – Understanding Wax Dopping

What Is Wax Dopping?

Wax dopping is a traditional lapidary technique used to temporarily attach a gemstone to a wooden stick, known as a dop stick, using specially formulated dopping wax.

Once the wax has cooled and hardened, the dop stick provides a convenient way to hold and control the gemstone during shaping, sanding and polishing.

This technique is particularly useful when working with smaller gemstones that may be difficult to hold securely by hand.

Why Do Lapidarists Use Dopping Wax?

Using a dop stick offers several practical advantages:

  • Improved Control: Provides a secure handle for working with smaller gemstones.

  • Greater Precision: Makes it easier to position and manoeuvre stones during shaping and polishing.

  • Reduced Handling: Helps keep fingers away from rotating grinding and polishing accessories.

  • Better Access: Allows more consistent access to the exposed surfaces of the gemstone.

  • Convenient Removal: Suitable dopping wax can be softened or carefully released when the gemstone work is complete.

Understanding Red and Green Dopping Wax

Grotto Gemstones offers both red and green lapidary dopping wax.

Both varieties are designed to soften when heated and form a firm holding bond as they cool.

Different wax formulations may have different working temperatures, flexibility and holding characteristics. The colour alone does not guarantee a particular melting temperature or holding strength.

For beginners, the most important skill is learning to warm the wax gradually, attach the gemstone securely and allow the bond to cool before beginning work.

Grotto Gemstones Workshop Tip: Australian opals can be sensitive to heat and sudden temperature changes. Always use gentle, controlled warming techniques and avoid exposing gemstones directly to an open flame.

Equipment Required for Wax Dopping

Before beginning your wax dopping project, it's important to have the correct equipment prepared and your work area organised.

1. Lapidary Dopping Spirit Lamp

Provides a controlled flame for gently softening dopping wax. Always use the manufacturer's approved fuel and operate the lamp on a stable, heat-resistant surface.

2. Red or Green Dopping Wax

Specially formulated wax used to temporarily attach gemstones to wooden dop sticks. The wax softens when warmed and hardens as it cools.

3. Wooden Dop Sticks

Provide a convenient handle for holding and controlling gemstones during shaping, sanding and polishing. Choose a stick size suitable for the gemstone.

4. Gemstone or Australian Opal

Select a suitable gemstone for your project. Beginners may find it easier to practise with inexpensive, heat-tolerant stones before attempting to dop more delicate Australian opals.

5. Heat-Resistant Work Surface

A stable, heat-resistant work area provides a safer place for preparing wax, handling equipment and allowing dop sticks to cool.

Grotto Gemstones Workshop Tip

Arrange your equipment before lighting the spirit lamp. Keep your workspace clear of unnecessary materials and ensure the lamp is positioned away from flammable objects.

Never apply an open flame directly to an Australian opal. Excessive heat and sudden temperature changes can cause damage.

Always allow the wax to cool and form a secure bond before beginning gemstone shaping or polishing.

Important Wax Dopping Safety Guidelines

Working with heated wax and spirit lamps requires care and attention. Before beginning any wax dopping project, please follow these important workshop precautions.

  • Eye Protection: Wear suitable safety glasses when working with heated wax and lapidary equipment.

  • Ventilation: Always work in a well-ventilated area and avoid breathing fumes from heated wax.

  • Spirit Lamp Safety: Use only the manufacturer's approved fuel. Never leave a burning spirit lamp unattended or refill it while lit or hot.

  • Heat Protection: Heated wax, dop sticks and gemstones can cause burns. Allow equipment to cool before handling.

  • Gemstone Protection: Australian opals may be sensitive to excessive heat and sudden temperature changes. Never expose an opal directly to an open flame.

  • Workspace Safety: Keep flammable materials away from the spirit lamp and work on a stable, heat-resistant surface.

  • Children: Keep heated equipment and wax out of children's reach.

Preparing and Using Your Dopping Spirit Lamp

In our next lesson, we'll explain how to prepare your Grotto Gemstones Dopping Spirit Lamp, organise your work area and gently soften dopping wax in preparation for attaching a gemstone.

We'll use photographs of our actual workshop equipment to demonstrate each stage.
