Grotto Gemstones Workshop Tip
Apply a small amount of your chosen polishing compound to the felt bob and polish using light, controlled pressure.
Select a bob shape that best suits the gemstone surface being polished. Rounded shapes are useful for curves and contours, while flatter profiles can be helpful for broader surfaces and edges.
Avoid excessive speed or pressure, as friction can generate heat and potentially damage heat-sensitive gemstones, particularly Australian opals.
For the best results, ensure scratches from previous grinding and sanding stages have been removed before beginning the final polishing process.
Important: We recommend keeping separate felt bobs for each polishing compound and abrasive grade to prevent contamination from coarser particles.
Clean and dry your polishing bobs appropriately after use and store them separately to maintain their polishing performance.
Safety: Always wear suitable eye protection and use effective dust control. A correctly fitted P2 respirator is recommended where airborne hazardous dust may be present. Keep fingers clear of rotating polishing bobs and ensure all rotary tools are operated according to the manufacturer's instructions. Keep electrical equipment protected from water and use only compatible accessories at suitable operating speeds. Children must be closely supervised, and powered polishing equipment should only be used by suitably trained operators.
