Aluminium Oxide Sharpening Stone – Diamond Bur Maintenance

Diamond Bur Dressing | Abrasive Maintenance | Lapidary Workshop Accessory

Grotto Gemstones Aluminium Oxide Sharpening Stones are designed for dressing and maintaining suitable diamond burs, helping restore cutting performance when abrasive surfaces become glazed or clogged during gemstone shaping and grinding.

Manufactured from durable aluminium oxide abrasive material, these sharpening stones help expose fresh diamond particles on compatible sintered and resin-bonded diamond burs, allowing them to continue cutting efficiently.

Regular maintenance can help extend the useful working life of suitable diamond burs and maintain consistent grinding performance.

Ideal for beginners, hobbyists and experienced lapidary enthusiasts working with Australian opals, quartz, agate and other gemstones.

Features & Benefits

  • Aluminium oxide abrasive construction for diamond bur dressing and maintenance.

  • Helps restore cutting efficiency to glazed sintered diamond burs.

  • Suitable for dressing compatible resin-bonded diamond burs where recommended by the bur manufacturer.

  • Helps expose fresh diamond abrasive for continued grinding performance.

  • Useful for maintaining burs used in gemstone shaping and grinding.

  • Practical addition to home workshops and lapidary clubs.

  • Suitable for beginners, hobbyists and experienced lapidarists.

Grotto Gemstones Workshop Tip

When sintered diamond burs begin to lose cutting efficiency, carefully dress the abrasive surface using the aluminium oxide sharpening stone.

Use light, controlled contact and avoid excessive pressure or prolonged dressing, which can unnecessarily wear the bur.

Use appropriate cooling or lubrication where required by the bur and sharpening stone manufacturers, and clean and dry your tools thoroughly after use.

Important: Aluminium oxide sharpening stones should not be used on electroplated diamond burs. Electroplated burs have a surface layer of bonded diamond particles, which can be damaged or removed during dressing.

For resin diamond burs, only use a sharpening stone where dressing is recommended for that particular bur construction.

Safety Guidelines

  • Always wear suitable safety glasses when working with abrasive tools.

  • Use effective dust control. A correctly fitted P2 respirator is recommended where hazardous airborne dust may be present.

  • Keep fingers clear of rotating burs and abrasive surfaces.

  • Follow the manufacturer's instructions for safe operating speeds, mounting and dressing procedures.

  • Keep mains-powered rotary tools, electrical connections and power supplies protected from water. A flex shaft alone does not make electrical equipment safe for wet operation.

  • Children must be closely supervised, and powered grinding equipment should only be used by suitably trained operators.
