Lapidary Dopping Wax – Red & Green

Secure Gemstone Holding | Wax Dopping | Gemstone Cutting & Polishing

Grotto Gemstones Lapidary Dopping Wax is designed for securely attaching gemstones to wooden dop sticks during shaping, grinding, sanding and polishing.

Available in red and green varieties, this traditional lapidary wax provides a practical holding solution for gemstones that require additional support and control during cutting and finishing.

When gently heated, the wax softens and can be moulded around the dop stick and gemstone. As it cools and hardens, it forms a firm bond, helping hold the stone securely throughout suitable lapidary operations.

Ideal for working with Australian opals, quartz, agate and other compatible gemstones where wax dopping is appropriate.

Available Options

  • Red Dopping Wax: Traditional lapidary dopping wax for attaching gemstones to dop sticks.

  • Green Dopping Wax: An alternative dopping wax option for gemstone holding and preparation.

Both varieties are suitable for general wax dopping applications. Working temperatures and holding characteristics may vary depending on the wax formulation.

Grotto Gemstones Workshop Tip

Gently warm your chosen dopping wax using a suitable spirit lamp or temperature-controlled wax heating equipment.

Apply the softened wax to your dop stick and carefully attach the gemstone, allowing the wax to form a secure bond directly with the stone.

Allow the wax to cool and harden completely before beginning any shaping, grinding or polishing operations.

Important: Australian opals can be sensitive to heat and sudden temperature changes. Avoid applying excessive heat directly to the gemstone and always use gentle, controlled warming techniques.

Once your work is complete, carefully release the gemstone using an appropriate wax removal method. Avoid sudden temperature changes or forcing the stone from the dop stick, as this may cause damage.

Important Shipping Information

Dopping wax is naturally brittle when cold, and some cracking or breakage may occur during postage.

This does not affect the wax's intended performance, as the pieces can be gently reheated and softened during normal use.

Safety Guidelines

  • Always wear suitable eye protection when working with heated wax.
